This is a true free-range hunt for kudu and nyala conducted in the rolling hills and bushveld of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The area is well known for producing mature, hard-earned kudu bulls and exceptional nyala, two of the most sought-after spiral-horned antelope in Africa. Kudus are often referred to as the “grey ghost” due to their ability to disappear into thick cover, while nyala are known for their striking appearance and preference for dense riverine habitat and heavy brush. Hunting is conducted using classic spot-and-stalk methods, with a strong focus on glassing from elevated vantage points and planning careful stalks through broken terrain and thick cover. This is not a high-fence environment, as every opportunity here is earned through patience, persistence, and skill. This hunt is ideal for someone looking for an authentic plains game experience in a natural, free-range setting!

The Hunting Area in KwaZulu-Natal

The hunt takes place near Dundee in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a region where highveld grasslands blend into thornveld bush and riverine habitat.

The terrain consists of:

  • Rolling hills and ridgelines
  • Deep-cut valleys and dry riverbeds
  • Open grassy slopes mixed with dense acacia bush
  • This varied landscape creates ideal conditions for kudu, allowing them to move freely while using terrain and vegetation for cover.

The Kudu and Nyala Hunting Methods

Each day begins early with coffee and a light breakfast before heading out to glass for trophy kudu and nyala from high vantage points overlooking valleys, river bottoms, and feeding areas. Kudus are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often feeding briefly before disappearing into thick cover, while nyala tend to stay closer to dense brush, riverine vegetation, and shaded thickets throughout the day. Once a mature bull is spotted, the hunt becomes a careful and strategic stalk to get within a comfortable shooting range. Terrain, vegetation, and wind direction all play a major role, and shots typically range from 80 to 250 yards depending on conditions and positioning.

Midday is usually spent back at camp resting and regrouping while the animals bed down during the heat of the day. In the afternoon, the hunt resumes as you and your PH move to fresh vantage points, check water and feeding areas, or slowly work through thicker cover where nyala are known to spend much of their time. Patience and careful glassing are essential, especially when hunting nyala, as mature bulls can appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly into dense vegetation. After sunset, you’ll return to camp for a hearty dinner and time around the fire discussing the day’s hunt and planning for the next outing.

About the Free-Range Animals

Kudus are one of Africa’s most iconic plains game animals, recognized for their long, spiraled horns and elusive behavior. Mature bulls in this region are known for their strong genetics and natural horn development. Kudu have incredible hearing and sharp sight, making it hard to find them in the bush and even a more difficult task to execute a successful stalk on a shooter!

The nyala is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most beautiful and elegant antelope species. Native to southern Africa, mature bulls are known for their dark charcoal coats, thin white vertical stripes, shaggy hair along the belly and neck, and impressive spiral horns that can grow over 30 inches long. Nyala thrive in thick bush, riverine habitat, and dense woodland areas where they rely heavily on cover and camouflage. Their calm but cautious nature, combined with their striking appearance, has made the nyala one of the most admired plains game species in Africa.

When you’re talking about free-range plains game in the Dundee area of KwaZulu-Natal, the question of trophy quality is really about age, horn development, genetics, and how natural the animals are. This region has a strong reputation for producing mature, hard-earned trophies rather than artificially managed animals. Every bull taken here is a result of a traditional hunting effort and is a pure African safari.

Additional Hunting Opportunities

If your trophies are taken early or you wish to extend your safari, a variety of additional free-range plains game species are available. This concession in particular has strong populations of high-quality impala, bushbuck, warthog, bushpig, grey duiker, mountain reedbuck, and common reedbuck on it, offering excellent opportunities to add additional species to your hunt.

Trophy Handling

After your trophies are harvested, recovery is handled promptly to ensure the highest trophy quality. Photos are taken while the animal is still fresh, after which field preparation begins without delay to prevent any heat damage. Field dressing is completed carefully, with the stomach and internal organs removed and the chest cavity opened to allow proper cooling. Special attention is given to cleanliness to avoid contamination of the cape and meat. Skinning and caping are then performed by experienced staff. For kudu, this typically involves preparing the cape for a shoulder mount. A precise cut is made behind the shoulders (not up the back) to preserve the integrity of the hide for taxidermy. The skin is carefully worked forward toward the head, with detailed attention given to the eyes, lips, nose, and ears. The ears are properly turned to prevent spoilage, and the horns remain attached to the skull.

Once caping is complete, the hide is thoroughly fleshed to remove all fat and tissue, then heavily salted to begin the preservation process. The cape is folded and stored in a cool, shaded area to continue curing. Each trophy is immediately tagged and documented with the hunter’s name, species, and date of harvest to ensure proper identification throughout the process. From camp, trophies are transported to a professional dip & pack or taxidermy facility of the client’s choosing. Delivery typically occurs within 2–4 weeks after the hunt.

Testimonials

"I had the hunting experience of a lifetime. And I have a real need to go back. I made many new friends from South Africa, Australia and the USA.

I strongly recommend both Discount African Hunts and this outfitter. John Martins set me up with a great outfitter, answered all my questions and made sure I had all my paperwork in order A to Z."

"In August 2014 I took a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The PH's worked hard to customize the hunt for me as I wanted a challenging stalk ending with taking the lioness at close range by an open sighted double rifle. They exceeded my expectations as 12 miles of tracking ended with me shooting the highly agitated lioness at a distance of 25 yards with a couple of rounds of 450 NE".

"I highly recommend a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts."

"I was hunting with my son and my batchmate from school. We had an experience of a life time and will definitely repeat the experience again. The weather was perfect. We shot Kudu / Zebra / Wildebeest / Impala / Red Hartebeest / Blesbuck / a day of bird shooting."

"We took back  memories for a life time  and will surly recommend the experience to other hunters."
