This 5-day Black Impala hunt takes place in the Limpopo Province of South Africa near Mookgophong. The safari is conducted on an exclusive high-fenced concession covering over 3,000 acres with a mixture of dense bushveld, open savanna, and rolling hills providing classic Limpopo plains game habitat.

The focus of this safari is one mature Black Impala, pursued primarily on foot using traditional tracking and spot-and-stalk hunting methods. Each morning, the PH and hunter search for fresh tracks and recent movement before beginning a stalk through the bush. The package includes 1×1 guiding, comfortable 3-star accommodations, meals, beverages, airport transportation, and the included Black Impala trophy fee.

 

About the Black Impala

Black Impala are a distinctive color variation of the Southern Impala rather than a separate species. They possess the same general body structure, behavior, and characteristic lyre-shaped horns as the common Impala, but their dramatically darker coloration makes them one of the most visually striking plains game trophies available in southern Africa. Mature Black Impala rams can range from very dark chocolate brown to nearly jet black, particularly across the shoulders, neck, back, and flanks. Some individuals retain lighter coloration around the face, belly, and inner legs, while exceptional animals can appear almost uniformly black. Their unusual coloration is the result of selective genetics that have been developed and maintained on managed South African properties.

Mature rams are medium-sized antelope with an athletic build and long, slender legs. Adult males carry deeply ridged, lyre-shaped horns that sweep backward before curving outward and upward. Horn length, symmetry, mass, and the overall shape of the curl are all important when evaluating trophy quality. Like common Impala, Black Impala are highly alert and depend heavily on sharp eyesight, hearing, and group awareness to detect danger. They frequently occupy mixed woodland and savanna environments where they can move between feeding areas and thicker cover. Rams may be seen alone, in bachelor groups, or with larger breeding groups depending on the season.

During the rut, mature rams become more territorial and actively defend groups of females from competing males. Vocalizations, chasing, horn clashes, and increased movement can make this an especially interesting period to hunt, although good trophy animals can be pursued throughout the broader South African hunting season. Their alert nature and preference for broken bushveld country mean that even when an animal is located, careful use of wind and cover is necessary to close the distance without being detected.

 

 

The Black Impala Hunting Area in Limpopo

The hunting concession is located in South Africa's Limpopo Province near Mookgophong. The exclusive property encompasses over 3,000 acres and has been hunted by the outfitter for approximately 25 years. The terrain is predominantly bushveld, with roughly 80% of the property consisting of thicker bush and native vegetation. This is broken by areas of open savanna and rolling hills, creating a varied landscape where hunters can glass openings before following tracks or stalking through heavier cover.

The combination of dense vegetation and open areas is particularly well suited to Impala. Animals can feed in the more open savanna while using thicker bush for shade, bedding, and security. The rolling terrain also provides occasional elevated positions from which hunters and PHs can study surrounding areas.

A wide variety of African game occupies the concession, ranging from plains game species to some of the continent's largest animals. This diversity creates a genuine African bushveld setting rather than a single-species hunting property.

 

 

Black Impala Hunting Methods

A typical hunting morning begins around 7:00 a.m. at the lodge with coffee, rusks, cereal, and preparation for the day's hunt. The hunter and PH generally enter the hunting area around 8:00 a.m. and begin by searching for fresh tracks and signs of recent Black Impala movement.

Once a fresh sign is located, the hunt transitions into a traditional tracking and stalking approach. The PH uses tracks, wind direction, vegetation, and knowledge of the property to determine where the animal is likely moving or feeding. The objective is to locate a mature ram without alerting it and then use available bush and terrain to close the distance.

Thick Limpopo vegetation can make the final approach challenging. Black Impala may only be visible for short periods as they move through brush, so the hunter must be prepared to move quietly and wait for a clear shooting lane. Once the PH identifies an appropriate trophy, the stalk continues until a safe, unobstructed shot becomes available. The hunt is conducted primarily on foot and provides a traditional African plains game experience rather than simply locating an animal from a truck.

 

About the Outfitter

The outfitter brings more than three decades of professional hunting experience in southern Africa and has hunted this particular concession for approximately 25 years. Their approach places considerable emphasis on personal attention, ethical hunting, sound shot selection, and creating a complete African safari experience rather than focusing solely on the final trophy.

The PH has experience hunting a wide range of South African game, including plains game and dangerous game, and uses that background to adapt each hunt to the individual hunter, species, terrain, and conditions. The operation is intentionally personal, with the goal of giving each guest an enjoyable and professionally guided experience from arrival through departure.

 

The 3-Star Limpopo Hunting Lodge

Hunters stay in a comfortable 3-star main lodge with permanent electrical power, cell phone service, and internet access. Guest rooms are spacious and feature comfortable beds, private en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, and heating, providing a comfortable place to relax after a day in the bush.

 

 

Meals are included throughout the safari and feature traditional South African dishes and braai-style cooking. Local beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks, coffee, and other refreshments are included during the stay. Evenings provide an opportunity to relax at the lodge, enjoy dinner, and spend time around the fire discussing the day's hunt before returning to the field the following morning.

 

Additional Hunting Opportunities

The concession supports an extensive variety of additional African game. Available species include Buffalo, Crocodile, Giraffe, Eland, Sable, Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Tsessebe, Waterbuck, Nyala, Common Impala, Blesbok, White Blesbok, and Common, Black, White, and Copper Springbok.

Additional species may be hunted according to current availability and the outfitter's trophy fee price list.

 

 

Trophy Handling and Care

After your Black Impala is harvested, the trophy is recovered and transported for field preparation. The cape and trophy components are carefully skinned, salted, identified, and prepared for collection by the taxidermist or dip & pack agent.

Trophies are normally transferred to the taxidermy or dip & pack provider within approximately 1–2 weeks after the hunt.

 

Taxidermy

Taxidermy and dip & pack services are not included. We recommend Hunters Heart Taxidermy to handle dip & pack and taxidermy services for this hunt. Trophies are generally collected from camp within one to two weeks after the safari concludes.

 

Getting to Limpopo

Hunters will fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. The outfitter will pick you up and drop you back off at the airport. No charter flights are required.

Before and after hunt accommodations are not required as part of the package, although hunters may choose to arrange an additional night in Johannesburg depending on international flight schedules.

 

The Black Impala Hunting Season

This Black Impala hunt is available year-round from January through December.

 

The Best Time to Hunt

The outfitter recommends March through September as the preferred period for this safari. These cooler and generally drier months often provide comfortable conditions for walking and stalking, while reduced vegetation later in the dry season can improve visibility through the bushveld.

 

Recommended Firearms and Rental Rifles

This outfitter recommends a .30-06 or .375 H&H for this hunt.

Rental firearms are available in several calibers, including .375 H&H, .30-06, .270 Winchester, and .243 Winchester.

Rifle rental is $30 per day. Hunters planning to rent a firearm should advise the booking agent in advance so the appropriate rifle and ammunition can be arranged.

 

Deposit Policy

A $2,500 deposit is required three months before the hunt. The remaining balance is payable on the last day of the safari. Accepted payment methods include bank transfer and cash.

 

Cancellation Policy

Hunts may be rescheduled one time at the outfitter's sole discretion. For any reschedulings, a $150 non-refundable payment is due to the booking agent.
