This is a 7-day free-range trophy Cape buffalo hunt in Namibia’s famed Caprivi Strip. There are approximately 4,000 buffalo in this area, so you will see lots of buffalo on this hunt. Buffalo hunting is somewhat of a numbers game. To shoot a big buffalo, you must look over several buffalo, and this is a great area to do just that. The area is on a strict quota system and this hunt is strictly a buffalo hunt. You can relocate to the outfitter’s plains game area in Bushmanland if you take your buffalo early, or you can just stay and observer the wildlife and do some fishing with your remaining time.
THE CAPRIVI STRIP HUNTING AREA
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow strip of land that juts east from the northeast corner of Namibia between Angola, Botswana and Zambia. The Caprivi Strip is tropical and is dominated by the Okavango, Zambezi and Chobe Rivers. There is a true rainy season there, comprised of December through March. Vast flood plains are formed, and this abundance of water helps to support a vast array of African wildlife.
THE KABULABULA CONSERVANCY
The Kabulabula Conservancy is characterized by the floodplains of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers. It is a combination of open grassland, lush woodland forests, wetlands, rivers and deltas – a unique and beautiful eco system. Vast herds of excellent high buffalo roam this area. It is estimated that 4,000 plus buffalo roam these plains and marshes. The area also has elephant, crocodile over 14 ft. and lots of old hippo bulls.
THE CAPRIVI STRIP FREE-RANGE BUFFALO HUNT
This hunt is a free-range hunt for trophy buffalo. You will be able to shoot the biggest buffalo available with no extra charge. Over 4,000 buffalo roam this vast area. You will see many buffalo each day and hunting will vary from stalking herds to singling out dugga boys and moving in close. This is a unique environment to hunt in and is known as one of the best areas to hunt “old-style” in all of Africa!
This hunt will be conducted in a traditional way. Based out of a tented camp, you will wake up, eat a light breakfast and then load up and head out for the day’s hunting. Lunch will be during mid-day when the animals are not as active and will consist of a picnic lunch conducted in a dry riverbed. Hunting methods will be conducted by driving and looking for tracks, buffalo and checking waterholes for sign. Once fresh sign or buffalo are spotted, the stalk will begin until you find the right buffalo and are in position to take a good shot.
The plains flood during the early months, creating small islands. If needed, you will cross over to them in a boat or wooden mokoro.
Once the buffalo is in the salt, you can remain at the camp and spend the remainder of your time game watching or fishing. You can also take a boat trip to Chobe National Park and view animals up close from the boat.
Victoria Falls is only 50 miles away. Visits can be arranged through the outfitter.
Once your buffalo is in the salt, additional plains game hunting is available at the outfitter’s Namibia plains Game concession.
THE CAPE BUFFALO OUTFITTER
This outfitter has been conducting big game hunts in these areas since 2010. This outfitter has been awarded Outfitter of the Year by the Dallas Safari Club (DSC) and has been selected as International Professional Hunter of the Year by Safari Club International (SCI). They specialize in traditional dangerous game safaris and are known throughout the hunting industry for the excellent staff, service and hunting experiences they offer.
THE CAPRIVI STRIP TENTED CAMP
Your hunt will take place from a luxury tented camp on the banks of the Chobe River. The camp features tents with en-suite bathrooms, electricity by generator, and daily laundry service. Each tent has two ¾ beds. Cell phone service is available in camp, but internet service is not available. All camps are equipped with a satellite phone in case of emergency. The food provided by this outfitter will be outstanding and will rival that served at any lodge!
You will be surrounded by the sounds of hippos and fish eagles. This will be one of your most memorable safaris that you have experienced.
TAXIDERMY
This outfitter uses Casper’s Taxidermy located in Grootfonten, Namibia. Field preparation is provided for all trophies. Then they are quarantined for at least one month. From there they are transported (included) to the taxidermist. The average for the trophies to be delivered to the taxidermist is from 3-4 months.
GETTING THERE
The hunting area can be accessed from 2 different airports. Most common will involve flying to Windhoek, NA, and then taking a commercial flight to Katima Mulilo Airport on Air Namibia. Those flights depart every odd day (Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sun around 10 am. from a smaller airport in Windhoek. The outfitter normally handles the transfer between airports. You will be met at Katima Mulilo Airport by the outfitter and then driven 2.5 hours to the hunting camp.
The other way to get there is to fly to Kasane, Botswana from Johannesburg, SA, and transfer to camp by vehicle. This will involve crossing the border from Botswana into Namibia. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours.
If you decide to extend your safari to hunt plains game, the best way is to fly to the Caprivi by one of the above-mentioned ways and after your plains game portion of the hunt is over, to ride with the outfitter to Windhoek and depart from there. The drive is approximately 7 hours. The outfitter avoids driving at night due to the large number of animals on the road.
DEPOSIT POLICY: 50% of the total package quoted is required to confirm a booking. The remaining portion of the package quoted is due 2 weeks before the start of the safari. The funds can be wired to a bank account in the US. Forms of payment accepted for the initial deposit are checks, credit cards (3.5% fee applies), or bank transfers.
