THE CAPRIVI STRIP HIPPO HUNT
This is a free-range hippopotamus hunt conducted in Namibia’s famous Caprivi Strip, one of the most game-rich and diverse ecosystems in all of Africa. With an abundance of water from the Chobe and Zambezi River systems, this area supports a strong population of hippo, offering consistent opportunities throughout the safari.
Hippo hunting is both unique and exciting, combining elements of dangerous game hunting with specialized techniques. Most hunts are conducted by boat and on foot, focusing on locating hippo either feeding out of the water or positioned along riverbanks and channels. Once a suitable bull is identified, your PH will guide you into position for a safe and effective shot.
This is an ideal hunt for someone looking to experience dangerous game in a dynamic environment, while also enjoying a high-success, well-managed safari.
THE CAPRIVI STRIP HUNTING AREA
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow stretch of land in northeastern Namibia, bordered by Angola, Botswana, and Zambia. This region is defined by the Zambezi, Chobe, and Okavango river systems, creating a lush, water-rich habitat unlike most of Namibia.
Seasonal flooding during the rainy months transforms the landscape into a network of floodplains, channels, and islands. This abundance of water attracts a wide range of wildlife and creates one of the most productive hunting areas in southern Africa.
THE KABULABULA CONSERVANCY
The hunt takes place within the Kabulabula Conservancy, a prime wildlife area known for its mix of river systems, reed beds, open grasslands, and dense woodland.
This unique ecosystem provides the ideal habitat for hippo, along with a wide variety of other game. Hunters will regularly encounter buffalo, elephant, crocodile, red lechwe, and zebra, with frequent sightings of large herds and diverse wildlife throughout the concession.
The combination of water, vegetation, and low hunting pressure makes this a truly special and productive hunting area.
THE HIPPO HUNT EXPERIENCE
Each day begins early with coffee and a light breakfast before heading out by boat or vehicle to begin glassing and locating hippo. Much of the hunt focuses on identifying animals as they move between water and feeding areas or positioning along riverbanks.
Once a suitable bull is located, the hunt transitions into a careful stalk. Shot placement is critical on hippo, and your PH will ensure you are in the proper position for a clean and ethical shot.
Depending on conditions, hunts may involve:
- Boat-based approaches along river systems
- Stalking hippo while they are out feeding
- Positioning along channels, pools, or riverbanks
Midday is typically spent resting or enjoying a packed lunch before continuing the hunt into the afternoon.
THE OUTFITTER
This outfitter has been conducting professional dangerous game hunts in the Caprivi region since 2010 and is highly regarded for their traditional safari approach.
They have received multiple industry recognitions, including Outfitter of the Year by Dallas Safari Club and International Professional Hunter of the Year by Safari Club International. Their team is known for delivering safe, well-organized, and highly successful hunts with experienced staff and excellent service.
THE CAPRIVI STRIP HIPPO CAMP
Your safari will be based at a very comfortable 4-star tented camp set along the river. The camp features spacious safari tents with en-suite bathrooms, generator-powered electricity, and daily laundry service.
The setting provides a true African bush experience, where you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of hippos and other wildlife nearby. Three-course meals are freshly prepared and served daily, with a focus on quality and variety.
The camp offers a relaxed and authentic safari atmosphere while still providing the comfort needed after long days in the field.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
If your hippo is taken early, or if you’d like to extend your experience, there are several excellent options available:
- Visit Victoria Falls (approximately 50 miles away)
- Boat safaris in Chobe National Park
- Wildlife viewing and fishing in the surrounding river systems
This area is known for its incredible concentration of wildlife, making it an outstanding destination beyond just hunting.
TAXIDERMY
Trophies are field-prepared on-site, including skinning and initial processing. They are then placed into quarantine for approximately one month before being transported to a licensed taxidermist.
This outfitter utilizes Casper’s Taxidermy in Grootfontein, Namibia, one of the most reputable facilities in the region. Delivery to the taxidermist typically takes about 2 months after the conclusion of your hunt.
GETTING THERE
There are two primary travel options to reach the hunting area:
Option 1:
Fly into Windhoek, Namibia, then take a domestic flight to Katima Mulilo Airport. From there, you will be met and transferred approximately 2.5 hours by road to the camp.
Option 2: (If not taking a firearm)
Fly into Kasane, Botswana, via Johannesburg. From Kasane, you will transfer by vehicle to camp, including a border crossing into Namibia. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours.
All road transfers are included, and no charter flights are required.
DEPOSIT POLICY
A 20% deposit is required to secure your hunt. The remaining balance is due before the start of the safari by either check or wire transfer.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Deposits are fully refundable if the hunt is canceled more than 6 months before the start date.
Within 6 months, deposits are non-refundable unless a replacement hunter is found.

Testimonials
"First, I wanted to tell you the buffalo hunt with the outfitter you booked me with was great! The PH took me to a farm where there was a good herd of buffalo and I shot a 40” old dagga boy. I could have taken another one a bit wider, 42”, with hard bosses but he did not have that old rough beat-up look I was after."

"I was hunting with my son and my batchmate from school. We had an experience of a life time and will definitely repeat the experience again. The weather was perfect. We shot Kudu / Zebra / Wildebeest / Impala / Red Hartebeest / Blesbuck / a day of bird shooting."
"We took back memories for a life time and will surly recommend the experience to other hunters."

"In August 2014 I took a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The PH's worked hard to customize the hunt for me as I wanted a challenging stalk ending with taking the lioness at close range by an open sighted double rifle. They exceeded my expectations as 12 miles of tracking ended with me shooting the highly agitated lioness at a distance of 25 yards with a couple of rounds of 450 NE".
"I highly recommend a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts."
