This combo hunt for both hippo and croc combines the last two of the dangerous seven, making this a perfect hunt if you’re needing to round out your list. Hunting these two trophies adds variety to the standard spot-and-stalk routine of African hunting, and these hunts can get you up close and personal to these two monsters!
About the Hippopotamus and the Nile Crocodile:
The hippopotamus is one of Africa’s most dangerous animals, despite its slow-moving appearance on land. Hippos spend most of their time in the water, emerging to feed primarily at night. Hunts typically take place along riverbanks or dams where fresh tracks or visible animals can be seen. They can weigh over 4,000 pounds, and shot placement on an animal this big is critical. Your trophy will either be a bull or a cow, depending on availability.
Nile crocodiles are stealthy and patient predators and are often found sunning themselves along sandbars or lying just beneath the water’s surface. These ancient reptiles are extremely wary of humans and make for a difficult and rewarding hunt. Crocs are hunted by glassing riverbanks and waterways to find one either sunning itself or seeing its head floating on the water. Shot placement is also crucial for a successful recovery of these prehistoric trophies, as brain shots are the preferred placement, yet their brain is the size of a gold ball. Your trophy fee included in this hunt is for a croc up to 12 feet, but upgrades are available upon inquiry.
The Hippo and Croc Hunting Areas:
Both of these hunts take place in South Africa’s Northwest Province. This outfitter hunts hippos on a nearby 10,000-acre government reserve about an hour from Rustenburg. He has had a 100% success rate here over the past several years. It is the perfect hippo environment as the concession has a 1,000-acre lake that holds water year-round. It is one of the best hippo hunting areas in South Africa.
The outfitter hunts his crocs on a 7,000-acre concession that holds some giants! He has taken crocs up to 16 feet in length off of here, so there are some huge trophies to be found. This concession has a big reservoir that is perfect crocodile territory. The reservoir increases in size during the rainy season and has the perfect terrain for stalking crocodiles. The land is mostly flat and has heavy bush cover until you start to approach the reservoir, where it then opens up with good spots for cover approaching the water. This concession also has lots of rhino and Cape Buffalo in the area, along with lots of quality plains game trophies as well.
The Hippo and Croc Hunting Lodge:
This outfitter has a very well-appointed 3.5-star lodge that he conducts these combo hippo/croc hunts out of. All guest rooms are very comfortable and feature en-suite full bathrooms with showers, along with great beds. The lodge features A/C and heat for all rooms.
The main lodge features a pool, fire pit, and common lounge areas. All the meals served here are excellent. Both the lodge and kitchen staff are professional and experienced. They are spot-on, and everything at the lodge runs smoothly thanks to them. Wi-Fi and cell phone access is available throughout the lodge, allowing you to stay connected if needed.
Other Available Animals:
If you harvest both your crocodile and hippo trophies early in the hunt, there are plenty of additional opportunities to continue hunting. These concessions have exceptional kudu, sable, roan, and klipspringer trophies, as well as giant Cape Buffalo trophies. More common plains game trophies also reside on these concessions and are trophy grade.
Rental Rifle and Recommended Calibers:
Rifle rental is $120 for the duration of this hunt. This outfitter has many different calibers, makes, and models to choose from for this hunt.
If bringing your own rifle, recommended calibers for this hunt are as follows:
Hippopotamus and Crocodile Rifle Hunting
Both of these animals are considered dangerous game in Africa. The minimum caliber is .375, and bigger calibers are always better!
Plains Game
If planning on harvesting plains game after your other animals, a minimum rifle caliber of .30-06 is recommended, up to a .375 caliber. The .375 caliber makes for a great all-around rifle in the bush, as solids are readily available for the .375, which can be used for taking the smaller animals of Africa without doing much damage to the trophies.
Getting There:
You will fly into Johannesburg, South Africa, and be picked up by your PH. You will then drive approximately 2 hours to the lodge where the combo hunt will be based. No overnight lodging in Johannesburg should be necessary, as long as your flight arrives between 7 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
DEPOSIT POLICY: A 30% deposit is required to book this hunt and reserve dates. The balance of the safari is due in cash, by credit card (Visa and MasterCard), or by wire transfer before departing camp.
Cancellation Policy: Deposits are non-refundable, but hunts can be extended in the same year or to subsequent years at the outfitter's discretion. Any increase in price or increase due to the exchange rate for hunts that are extended to later years will be the client’s responsibility. All rescheduled hunts are subject to a $150 administration fee, which will be collected by the booking agent before processing the change.

"I would recommend this hunt although I would recommend John at Discount African Hunts even more. Areas can get hot and cold but John always knows the hot spots to send hunters."

"I booked a plains game hunt in South Africa through Discount African Hunts. The price was half of what other outfitters were selling the same package of animals for. After being assured by John Martins that this offer was for real I went ahead and booked. Everything turned out just like I was told and I took 7 beautiful trophies on the trip of my lifetime. Don't let the low prices hold you back. I am sure I will never take a hunt of this quality again at a price like I paid. My hunt was awesome!"
