The Greater Southern Kudu

A trophy Greater Southern Kudu is one of the most sought-after trophies in Africa.  It is usually at the top of the list for first-timers and remains on the list for several of us trip after trip.  Greater Southern Kudu reach lengths of well over 60”, but a 60” kudu is the gold standard and is considered the achievement of a lifetime of hunting plains game in Africa.  Any kudu over 50” is a good one, and from 55” up is considered exceptional.

The Kudu Hunting Area

Your hunt for Greater Southern kudu will occur on a privately owned 25,000-acre reserve located in the Limpopo Province near the town of Louis Trichard. The nearest airport is in Polokwane, which is 1 hour from the camp. The area is in the Soutpansberg Mountains and has lots of thick bush for kudu to hide in.

The Kudu Hunting Method

A typical hunting day will begin by driving up to the mountains and then getting out and hiking up the mountains on foot to get set up in a strategic position to glass for kudu. The terrain is very mountainous, and this hunt will require lots of walking and even more glassing.  Once a trophy bull is located, a stalking plan will be made to get you within shooting position to take your bull.  Due to the mountainous terrain, you can expect to take shots of up to 300 yds.

Big Trophy Kudu

The Soutpansberg area is also home to some unique plains game species like Limpopo Bushbuck, Klipspringer, Mountain Reedbuck, Mountain Zebra, Nyala and others.  This concession is also a great bow hunting destination.

The Kudu Hunting Lodge

During your hunt for a Greater Southern Kudu you will stay in a 4-star lodge set deep in the Limpopo bush.  The lodge has permanent power and all bedrooms have in-suite bathrooms.  The camp was originally built in the late 70’s for the South African heads of state. This camp has all the necessities to ensure a luxurious stay.

Getting There

Most clients will fly in to Johannesburg, and depending on the time of arrival, continue to Polokwane or overnight at a Guest House in Johannesburg and then fly to Polokwane in the morning.  The outfitter’s representative will meet you at the airport and drive 1 hour to camp.

Testimonials

"In August 2014 I took a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The PH's worked hard to customize the hunt for me as I wanted a challenging stalk ending with taking the lioness at close range by an open sighted double rifle. They exceeded my expectations as 12 miles of tracking ended with me shooting the highly agitated lioness at a distance of 25 yards with a couple of rounds of 450 NE".

"I highly recommend a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts."

"I was hunting with my son and my batchmate from school. We had an experience of a life time and will definitely repeat the experience again. The weather was perfect. We shot Kudu / Zebra / Wildebeest / Impala / Red Hartebeest / Blesbuck / a day of bird shooting."

"We took back  memories for a life time  and will surly recommend the experience to other hunters."
