This is a heck of a deal on a free-range bull hippo on a river system that feeds a major national park in South Africa. The property is adjacent to one of Africa’s major national parks and consists of 60,000 acres that have 40 km of river chock full of hippos and crocodiles. Why hunt your hippo in a high-fence concession in a pond when you can hunt a free-ranging hippo on an unfenced private concession that also has Cape buffalo and other dangerous game?
THE HIPPO HUNTING AREA
This hunt takes place on a private reserve that borders a major national park in South Africa. The outfitter has obtained a select number of exportable bull hippo permits and plans on hunting 5-6 hippo bulls each year. The arrival airport will be Nelspruit and the nearest town is Malelane. The free-range hippo hunting property consists of 60,000 acres with 40 km of a river that feeds the National Park. There are adjacent sugar cane fields where the hippos come out to feed at night.
THE HIPPO HUNTING METHODS
The hippo hunt will start each day with a hearty breakfast and then you will go out and look for hippo activities and then make a plan. Hippos may be taken in the water, sunning on the bank, or in the cane fields at night. Having been on a nighttime hippo hunt, I can assure you that it is an exciting way to hunt hippos! You never know what is going to happen when you turn on the spotlight. Sometimes they run as a group and sometimes they scatter. And sometimes they run right at you. You don't want to get caught up close between a panicked hippo and the water they are headed for!
Plains game is also available after your hippo is in the salt. Plains game hunting may be conducted in the same area as the hippo hunt occurs on, or depending on available quota and species desired, may occur on nearby game ranches. The minimum size of the ranches that will be hunted is 9,000 acres.
THE 4-STAR HIPPO HUNTING LODGE
You will stay at a 4-star luxury lodge that provides the hunters with the ultimate African grandeur. The private chalets feature air-conditioning and each bush chalet has its own private deck overlooking the nature reserve. Here you can enjoy the early morning calls of the wild and experience the nature of the bush.
The chalets are equipped with a mini-bar fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, built-in safe, superior quality mattresses and sheets, and en-suite bathrooms. Internet and cell phone service are available in the camp. The food and level of service are outstanding and are a great example of what a safari should be!
GETTING THERE
Clients will fly to Nelspruit, South Africa, where they will be met by the outfitter and driven to camp. The hunt will start the next morning.
TAXIDERMY
The outfitter uses Life Form Taxidermy for dip and pack and taxidermy services.

Testimonials
"First, I wanted to tell you the buffalo hunt with the outfitter you booked me with was great! The PH took me to a farm where there was a good herd of buffalo and I shot a 40” old dagga boy. I could have taken another one a bit wider, 42”, with hard bosses but he did not have that old rough beat-up look I was after."

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt. By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price. I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow. The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable. I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard in Zimbabwe.

"Best advice I can give is don't let the word DISCOUNT scare you. I was skeptical but I have hunted all over and I can tell you these trips are top notch! Everything was described accurately, no surprises. I took 9 trophies - almost every one made gold medal. I would highly recommend John Martins and Discount African Hunts. I already have another trip booked with them and I am looking at 2 more. I got everything I wanted and saved thousands doing it!"
