This free-range Reedbuck Slam takes place in northern KwaZulu-Natal near Ladysmith, South Africa, and combines three distinctly different antelope hunts into one package: Vaal Rhebok, Common Reedbuck, and Mountain Reedbuck. The hunt is conducted across an extensive 28,000-acre low-fenced property made up of open grasslands, rolling hills, rocky ridges, valleys, and bushveld, providing the varied habitat needed to pursue all three species.

Although often grouped together as a Reedbuck Slam, each species requires a different approach. Common Reedbuck favor lower grasslands and wetter areas, Mountain Reedbuck are associated with rocky slopes and elevated grasslands, while Vaal Rhebok are typically found on open hillsides and higher ground. Hunting is conducted primarily by glassing and spot-and-stalk, with the PH adapting each day's hunt to the habitat, weather, and natural movement of the animals.

 

About the Animals

Common Reedbuck are medium-sized antelope closely associated with tall grass, wetlands, drainage areas, and low-lying grasslands. Mature rams carry forward-curving horns and frequently rely on thick grass for concealment, often remaining hidden until they feel pressured. Early mornings and late afternoons can provide excellent opportunities as animals move through more open feeding areas.

Mountain Reedbuck are smaller and lighter than Common Reedbuck and favor elevated grasslands, rocky slopes, ridges, and broken hill country. They are often found in small groups and depend heavily on their eyesight and the openness of their habitat to detect danger. Locating a mature ram typically involves extensive glassing followed by careful use of terrain to close the distance.

Vaal Rhebok are distinctly different in appearance, with a slender build, gray coat, and straight, narrow horns on mature males. They favor open mountainous grasslands and high slopes where their exceptional eyesight can make an approach challenging. With little vegetation available for concealment in much of their preferred habitat, successfully stalking a mature Vaal Rhebok often requires patience, careful planning, and intelligent use of the terrain.

 

The Hunting Area in KwaZulu-Natal

The hunt takes place in northern KwaZulu-Natal near Ladysmith, South Africa, on an extensive 28,000-acre free-range hunting property. The outfitter has hunted this concession for over seven years, and the property is low-fenced rather than a conventional high-fence hunting area, allowing game to move naturally throughout the region.

The concession features a combination of open grasslands, rolling hills, rocky ridges, valleys, and bushveld. This diversity is particularly well suited to a Reedbuck Slam because each of the three included species occupies a somewhat different portion of the landscape. Common Reedbuck are most often sought in taller grass and lower-lying areas, Mountain Reedbuck favor rocky hillsides and grassy slopes, while Vaal Rhebok are searched for on open hillsides, ridgelines, and higher grassland.

Glassing plays an important role throughout the hunt. The PH will use elevated vantage points to study slopes, valleys, and grasslands before deciding whether an animal is mature enough to pursue. Because these are free-ranging animals, their locations can change according to weather, grazing conditions, pressure, and natural movement, making each day's hunt different.

 

The Reedbuck Slam Hunting Methods

Each hunting day begins at the lodge with fresh coffee and breakfast before heading into the concession around first light. Much of the initial hunt is spent traveling between productive areas and stopping at vantage points to glass open grasslands, hillsides, valleys, and rocky slopes. Once animals are located, the PH will evaluate individual rams for age, horn quality, and maturity before deciding whether to begin a stalk.

The hunting approach changes considerably between the three species. Common Reedbuck may require working through tall grass or using drainage lines and surrounding vegetation for cover. Mountain Reedbuck are often spotted from across a valley or hillside, requiring the hunter to use ridges and folds in the terrain to approach unseen. Vaal Rhebok can be particularly challenging because they inhabit open country where both hunter and animal have long sightlines, making careful positioning and patience important.

Once a mature animal is selected, the PH will assess the wind, terrain, available cover, and the animal's movements before planning the final approach. After a successful harvest, there will be time for photographs before the animal is recovered and taken to the skinning shed for trophy preparation. If sufficient daylight remains, the hunt continues for the next species before returning to the lodge for dinner and time around the fire.

 

About the Outfitter

The outfitter has hunted this particular concession for over seven years and focuses on free-range hunting, mature animals, and a personalized 1×1 experience. Rather than relying on guaranteed concentrations of game, their approach to hunting this concession is rooted in local knowledge, careful glassing, and adapting each day to the natural movement of the animals.

The PH will carefully assess available trophies and work with the hunter to determine which animals are worth pursuing on each outing. Weather, terrain, animal movement, and current conditions all play a role in determining how each day unfolds, creating an authentic and flexible African hunting experience.

 

The Free-Range Plains Game Hunting Lodge

Hunters are accommodated at a fully catered and fully staffed 3-star lodge. There are eight standalone units, each featuring a private bathroom, kitchenette, double bed, air conditioning, and heating.

The lodge has permanent electrical power with generator backup, cell phone service, and internet access. Meals are excellent, and soft drinks, wine, and beer are all included.

 

Additional Hunting Opportunities

Other free-range species are available to be hunted in addition to the Vaal Rhebok, Common Reedbuck, and Mountain Reedbuck included in this package. Because the property is free-range, species are not guaranteed to be present in any particular numbers, and opportunities depend on natural animal movement and current conditions.

Your PH can advise you on available species and current trophy quality during the safari, allowing additional animals to be pursued when time and conditions permit.

 

Trophy Handling

After your trophies are harvested, recovery is handled promptly to ensure the highest possible trophy quality. Photos are taken while the animal is still fresh, after which field preparation begins without delay. Field dressing and skinning are completed carefully, with attention given to protecting the cape and other trophy components.

Trophies are carefully prepared, identified, and protected after recovery before being transferred to Hunters Heart for taxidermy or dip & pack, documentation, and shipping.

 

Taxidermy

We recommend Hunters Heart Taxidermy for dip & pack and taxidermy services. Trophies are transferred from the hunting operation after field preparation and handled through the taxidermy or dip & pack process before being prepared for export.

 

Getting There

Hunters will fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Your Professional Hunter will meet you at the airport, assist with firearm clearance, and provide the approximately three-hour road transfer to the hunting lodge.

At the completion of the safari, you will make the approximately three-hour road journey back to the airport. No charter flights are required.

Before and after the hunt, accommodations are usually necessary in Johannesburg at the African Sky Boutique Hotel.

 

The Hunting Season

This hunt is available year-round.

 

The Best Time to Hunt

While this safari is available throughout the year, the outfitter recommends March through September as the best time to hunt. These cooler months generally provide comfortable conditions for spending long periods glassing and stalking across the open grasslands and mountainous terrain.

 

Recommended Firearms

For the species included in this hunt, a flat-shooting rifle suitable for medium-sized plains game is ideal. Calibers such as the .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, or similar cartridges provide a good combination of accuracy and performance, particularly because shots on Mountain Reedbuck and Vaal Rhebok may occur across open valleys or hillsides.

Rental rifle calibers include .308, .30-06, and .300 Winchester Magnum options. Rifles include scopes and suitable hunting ammunition. Please advise the booking agent if you will be using a rental rifle so the appropriate firearm can be reserved.

 

Deposit Policy

A 30% deposit is required to book this hunt. The full balance of the safari package is due in camp on the last day of the safari. Accepted payment methods include cash, credit cards, and wire transfers.

 

Cancellation Policy

Deposits are non-refundable. Hunts may be rescheduled at the outfitter's sole discretion based on new available dates. If the hunter is permitted to reschedule, a 10% fee will apply. A $150 fee is also payable directly to the booking agent for any rescheduled hunt. Hunts moved to a subsequent year will be subject to that year's pricing.

EXCLUSIONS: International airfare, before and after hunt accommodations, rifle rental, ammunition, observer fees, additional hunting days, taxidermy, dip & pack, trophy shipping, gratuities, spirits, and personal expenses.
