THE CROCODILE HUNTING AREA
The hunt will take place on an exclusive hunting concession in the Limpopo Province of South Africa near the town of Swartwater, which is one of the few areas where you can take wild crocodiles in South Africa. The outfitter's average crocodile in this area is over 12 feet in length. The outfitter told me that he has taken crocs up to 16 ft. on this concession!
The hunting areas consist of 2,500 hectares, and is next to the Limpopo River. This is beautiful crocodile country and once the Limpopo River’s water level goes down during the dryer months, all sorts of pools and gullies are formed just off the main river. There is also a natural pan that runs alongside the river that fills up during the rainy season and big crocodiles like to utilize this pan to catch bushbuck, impala and other game.
The terrain is mostly flat and sandy with heavy brush and as one gets closer to the river it starts to become more open with taller trees becoming more numerous. Some of the gullies near the river also open up to form pans. When the river starts to dry up, hundreds of rock pools are formed and makes this a beautiful site. Bushbuck and waterbuck like to hide in the nearby reed beds along the river, where they fall prey to the crocodiles.
THE CROCODILE HUNT
This hunt for wild crocodiles in South Africa will be primarily done on foot. You will walk and stalk, always keeping a lookout for a trophy crocodile either sunning himself or lurking in the water waiting on prey. Once a big croc is spotted, you will decide on a plan and stalk to within shooting distance of the trophy crocodile. An accurate shot is necessary to pin the croc on shore and prevent him from escaping into the water and disappearing. Crocodile that face some hunting pressure are extremely cunning, as they possess excellent senses of hearing, smell and vision. Sneaking up on a trophy crocodile is a lot more challenging and exciting than many hunters realize.
The outfitter has obtained permits to be able to hunt these crocodiles legally. That makes this hunt significantly different than many of the other crocodile hunts in South Africa where the permits used are not issued for the property you are hunting on, and therefore are technically illegal.
Once you are successful l by taking your trophy bull crocodile you may continue hunting for the plains game species that are numerous on the concession. Trophy fees for other species are listed below:
The best time of year to Hunt Crocodiles in South Africa is July through September when the Limpopo river is low and the crocodiles are concentrated in the remaining backwater pools.
12 foot plus crocodiles are possible and do get shot here!
