Cape buffalo have long been regarded as one of Africa's most respected dangerous game animals, and this hunt offers the opportunity to pursue a mature bull in the bushveld of Limpopo Province. Conducted on a professionally managed concession, the hunt revolves around locating fresh tracks, following buffalo through thick cover, and carefully closing the distance for an effective shot. Every opportunity is earned through patience, teamwork, and traditional dangerous game hunting methods.

The Cape Buffalo Hunting Area

The hunt takes place near Mookgophong in South Africa's Limpopo Province on a private 1,250-hectare hunting concession that has been professionally managed for more than 25 years. The property consists primarily of dense bushveld interspersed with open savanna, gentle rolling hills, and scattered rocky terrain that create excellent habitat for Cape buffalo.

Approximately eighty percent of the concession is covered in thick bush, providing buffalo with excellent cover and making careful tracking an important part of the hunt. The remaining open areas allow hunters to glass from a distance before planning a careful approach. The combination of dense vegetation and more open terrain creates a challenging but rewarding dangerous game hunting environment.

The Cape Buffalo Hunting Experience

Each morning begins with coffee and a light breakfast before heading into the concession shortly after sunrise. The first objective is to locate fresh buffalo tracks and determine the direction of travel. Your PH and trackers will help decide how to begin the stalk.

Once fresh sign is found, the pace of the hunt slows considerably. Buffalo often travel through thick bush, requiring your hunting team to move quietly while paying constant attention to wind direction, visibility, and the surrounding cover. As the distance closes, communication becomes minimal, with each member of the team focused on safely positioning the hunter for a clear shot.

Mature bulls frequently pause to feed or rest in thicker vegetation during the warmer part of the day, making patience an important part of the hunt. If necessary, the team will back out and continue the pursuit later in the afternoon when movement increases again. Most shooting opportunities occur between 40 and 100 yards, although every encounter is dictated by the buffalo's behavior and the surrounding terrain.

About the Cape Buffalo

The Cape buffalo is one of Africa's legendary Big Five animals and has earned a worldwide reputation as one of the continent's toughest and most respected dangerous game species. Mature bulls are recognized by their massive bosses, heavy horn bases, and exceptional strength. Bulls offered on this hunt measure up to 44 inches, representing excellent trophy quality.

Buffalo are highly social animals that typically live in herds, although older bulls often become solitary or form small bachelor groups commonly referred to as "dugga boys." They rely heavily on their exceptional sense of smell and hearing while moving confidently through thick bush where visibility is limited. Their combination of intelligence, awareness, and physical toughness has made the Cape buffalo one of the most sought-after dangerous game trophies in Africa.

Meals are freshly prepared each day and include a variety of traditional South African dishes along with beer, wine, and spirits. Evenings are spent relaxing at the lodge, sharing stories from the day's hunt, and preparing for the next morning's pursuit.

Additional Hunting Opportunities

Should your buffalo be taken early or you wish to extend your safari, numerous additional plains game and dangerous game hunting opportunities are available. Your PH can recommend the best trophies based on the season and the amount of time you have left to hunt.

Trophy Handling

After your trophy is harvested, recovery is handled promptly to ensure the highest trophy quality possible. Photos are taken while the animal is still fresh before field preparation begins. Skinning is completed carefully by experienced staff to preserve the integrity of the hide for taxidermy purposes.

Special attention is given to proper fleshing, salting, and cooling of the hide to prevent spoilage. The trophy is tagged and documented immediately after preparation to ensure proper identification throughout the process. We recommend Hunters Heart Taxidermy to handle dip & pack and taxidermy services for this hunt. Trophies are generally collected from camp within one to two weeks after the safari concludes.

This outfitter uses Hunters Heart Taxidermy. Hunters Heart will pick up your trophies for free and will take multiple shipping bids on your behalf when the time comes to ship your trophies home.

The Hunting Season

This hunt is available year-round.

The Best Time to Hunt

Although Cape buffalo may be hunted throughout the year, the months of March through September generally provide the best conditions. Cooler temperatures make tracking more comfortable, and thinner vegetation often improves visibility while stalking through the bushveld.

Recommended Firearms

A minimum caliber of .375 H&H is recommended for this hunt, although any larger dangerous game caliber is equally suitable. Premium soft-point or bonded bullets are recommended. This outfitter has a .375 H&H to rent for this buffalo hunt.

Typical shooting distances range from 40 to 100 yards.

Deposit Policy

A $5,000 deposit is required to secure your safari. The remaining balance is due on the final day of the hunt.

Cancellation Policy

Hunts may be rescheduled one time at the outfitter's sole discretion. If rescheduled for the subsequent year, that year's pricing will apply. For any reschedulings, a $150 non-refundable payment is due to the booking agent.
