Where can I hunt a Trophy Waterbuck?

One of the best areas in Africa to hunt a trophy waterbuck is in the midlands region of Kwazulu-Natal. This area has produced waterbuck up to 34” and consistently produces many of the largest trophy waterbucks that are taken in Africa today. With both free-range and large fenced, privately-held properties having the right mix of cover, nutrition and genetics, the Midland region is a primary destination to hunt a giant trophy waterbuck.

The Waterbuck Hunting Area

This trophy waterbuck hunt will take place in the Midlands area of Kwazulu-Natal near the town of Ladysmith. The area is known for producing large waterbuck in addition to some very large nyala, common reedbuck, Vaal reedbuck, and mountain reedbuck. This area consists of rolling mountains with scattered acacia bushes, some thicker riverine bushes, and open grasslands with mixed acacia bushes interspersed with open areas.

Connections with local landowners provide access to areas that are infrequently hunted. These areas tend to produce some of the largest waterbuck available. Your outfitter has exclusive rights to hunt many of these areas, leading to the taking of some exceptional trophies.

How Do I Hunt a Trophy Waterbuck?

The majority of a trophy waterbuck hunt will consist of spot, walk, and stalk. The truck will be used for transport between areas. Then glassing will be used to find a trophy specimen and the hunt will begin! A stalk will be used to get into an advantageous shooting position.

Trophy waterbuck tend to favor open flat areas and they tend to stay near dams and riverine areas. They normally lay up during the daytime. A typical day hunting will involve an early start and you will hunt until late morning when the waterbuck tend to lay down in the heat of the day.  After a lunch break, you will resume hunting around 2:30pm.

This is not a put-and-take hunt where large animals have been purchased at an auction! This is a fair-chase hunt where these animals have been born and raised where you will hunt them. They don't get this big by being stupid! They are clever and you will hunt hard for your trophy. So if you are looking to "buy" a trophy waterbuck and pay by the inch, this is not your hunt. But if you want to put the odds in your favor and hunt exclusive properties that have produced memorable trophy waterbuck in the past with an expert, then this is the hunt for you!

Other trophy plains game animals are available during this trophy waterbuck hunt. See the outfitter’s trophy fee price list for more info:

The Hotel

During your trophy waterbuck hunt, you will stay at a historic 4-star hotel. This hotel features king beds and in-suite luxury bathrooms in every room.  Each room has a flat-screen tv, and cell phone and internet service is available.

There is an on-site bar and restaurant on site. The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor seating. The food and service are excellent.  Next door is a brewery/pub. For variety, there are several good restaurants in the surrounding area.

It doesn’t get much better than this! This is one of my favorite places to stay while hunting. Although many hunters might prefer a traditional hunting camp, this historic hotel offers a nice change of pace and a unique setting for a trophy hunt.

Getting There

Depending on where you are in South Africa, when starting your waterbuck hunting safari, you will fly to Durban where you will be met by your outfitter and driven the 2.5 hour drive to the hotel. Several flights a day are offered between Johannesburg and Durban.

So if you are looking for a special kind of waterbuck, this is a hunt that can produce a giant and deserves to be included in my trophy hunt section.

"This was our first time to Africa and it was incredible. We were able to harvest all the animals on our wish list and they were fantastic quality trophies.  I would recommend this hunt as you are only about 2 hours from Johannesburg. Thanks to Discount African Hunts we connected with an awesome outfitter and took some great trophies!."

"I spent weeks visiting websites for outfitters in Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, comparing pre-made packages and regular fees. In the end, for a 7-day, six animal hunt with my son as an observer/hunter, John Martins had the best price."

'It was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on. We stalked a small bachelor group for a few days before I shot a mature cape buffalo with my Browning 375 H&H.'

'This was my third hunt with Discount African Hunts and each one has been fantastic.  I don't think I would book my future African hunts with anyone else.'
