Conducted on a well-managed hunting concession, this safari combines traditional tracking with careful spot-and-stalk hunting to create a challenging and rewarding dangerous game experience.

Every hunt begins with finding fresh tracks. From there, success depends on reading the lioness's movements, using the wind and terrain effectively, and carefully closing the distance for a safe and ethical shot. This hunt is ideal for hunters looking to experience dangerous game hunting while still relying on traditional hunting methods and sound decision-making.

 

The Hunting Area

The hunt takes place near Hartebeesfontein in South Africa's North West Province on a professionally managed 1,250-hectare hunting concession that has been hunted for more than 25 years. The property consists of classic African bushveld, featuring a mixture of open savanna, thorn bush, scattered trees, rolling hills, and thicker pockets of vegetation.

This combination of habitat provides excellent cover for lionesses while also allowing hunters to glass more open areas before planning a stalk. The rolling terrain and natural vegetation create a variety of hunting situations, requiring hunters to continually adapt their approach based on the wind, visibility, and the animal's movements.

 

The Lioness Hunting Experience

Each morning begins with coffee and breakfast before heading into the concession to begin searching for fresh tracks. Your Professional Hunter and trackers work together to determine where the lioness has been moving and develop a plan for the day's hunt. You'll typically drive the back dirt roads, looking for any sign of fresh tracks that may have crossed over during the night.

Once fresh tracks are located, the pace of the hunt changes. Progress becomes slower and more deliberate as every member of the hunting team pays close attention to the wind, surrounding cover, and the lioness's direction of travel. Rather than covering large distances quickly, the focus is on moving carefully and using the terrain to remain undetected while closing the distance.

As the stalk develops, your Professional Hunter works to position you for a clear, ethical shot while maintaining safety as the highest priority. Opportunities are often at relatively close range, and remaining calm and patient is essential. During the warmest part of the day, the hunt may slow as the lioness seeks heavier cover, before resuming later in the afternoon when temperatures begin to cool.

 

About the Lioness

Lionesses are the primary hunters within a pride and are responsible for most successful kills. They are highly intelligent predators that rely on stealth, teamwork, and careful use of cover rather than sheer size or strength. Their exceptional eyesight, hearing, and awareness allow them to detect danger quickly, making them surprisingly difficult animals to approach.

Without the heavy mane of a mature male, lionesses blend remarkably well into the surrounding bushveld and tall grass. Their athletic build, natural camouflage, and cautious behavior often make them more difficult to spot than many hunters expect. Pursuing a mature lioness requires patience, careful observation, and precise shot placement.

The Hunting Lodge

Hunters stay in a comfortable 3-star lodge offering spacious guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, heating, permanent electricity, Wi-Fi, and cell phone service.

Meals are freshly prepared each day and include a variety of traditional South African cuisine. After returning from the field, the lodge provides a comfortable place to relax, enjoy dinner, and discuss the day's hunt before preparing for the following morning.

 

Additional Hunting Opportunities

Should your lioness be taken early, or if you wish to extend your safari, numerous additional plains game species are available. Your PH can recommend the best trophies based on the season and the amount of time you have left to hunt.

Lioness Trophy Handling

After your trophy is harvested, recovery is handled promptly to ensure the highest trophy quality possible. Photos are taken while the animal is still fresh before field preparation begins. Skinning is completed carefully by experienced staff to preserve the integrity of the hide for taxidermy purposes.

Special attention is given to proper fleshing, salting, and cooling of the hide to prevent spoilage. The trophy is tagged and documented immediately after preparation to ensure proper identification throughout the process. We recommend Hunters Heart Taxidermy to handle dip & pack and taxidermy services for this hunt. Trophies are generally collected from camp within one to two weeks after the safari concludes.

 

Getting There

Hunters will fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Upon arrival, you will be met by a member of the hunting team and transferred by road to the concession near Hartebeesfontein. The drive takes approximately 3 hours, and no charter flights are required.

 

The Hunting Season

This hunt is available year-round.

 

The Best Time to Hunt

Although lionesses may be hunted year-round, the months of June through September generally offer the best hunting conditions. Cooler temperatures make tracking and stalking more comfortable while improving daytime animal activity.

 

Taxidermy

This outfitter uses Hunters Heart Taxidermy, which is the only taxidermist in South Africa that is approved by Discount African Hunts. Hunters Heart Taxidermy will pick up your trophies for free and will take multiple bids to help you keep the shipping cost down.

 

 

Recommended Firearms

A minimum caliber of .375 H&H is required for this hunt, although any larger dangerous game caliber is equally suitable. Premium expanding bullets should be used to ensure ethical and effective performance. This outfitter has a .375 H&H to rent for this lioness hunt.

Typical shooting distances range from 40 to 120 yards.

 

Deposit Policy

A $3,000 deposit is required at least three months prior to the hunt to secure your safari. Payment may be made by bank transfer or cash. The remaining balance is due on the final day of the hunt.

 

Cancellation Policy

Hunts may be rescheduled one time at the outfitter's sole discretion. As lions are permitted, no rescheduling is possible within 30 days of the hunt. For any reschedulings, a $150 non-refundable payment is due to the booking agent.
