This is hunting in a unique part of Africa at its best!  Buffalo hunters dream about hunting in Maasailand where herds of buffalo mix with the Maasailand people’s cattle as they have for thousands of years. Some of the biggest buffalo taken in Africa today come from this area. Add the cultural experience of mixing with the Massai people and this is one of the world's most memorable hunting experiences!

THE MAASAILAND AREA AND PEOPLE

The Masailand area is similar to the famous areas where Earnest Hemmingway and Robert Ruark took their well-written about safaris. A Massailand safari is both a fabulous hunt and a cultural experience.  During this hunt you will meet and interact daily with the Maasai people.

Maasai are pastoralist and have resisted the urging of the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. They have demanded grazing rights to many of the national parks in both countries and continue to live a life steeped in African rituals and tradition.

The Maasai people have lived alongside most wild animals for thousands of years. The Maasai have an aversion to eating game and birds. Maasailand is now considered to be East Africa's finest game area.

The concession's topography is made up of vast plains with small hills which create seasonal rivers and drainages during the rainy seasons. The dry season transforms these into dry sand rivers which empty into bottom areas, which form great lookouts over the vast plains that game in this region tends to favor. The terrain is generally flat, but in the rainy season the rivers and drainages present an abundance of water for the game as well as the local Maasai cattle and goats. The buffalo hunting areas are vast and encompass over 800,000 acres.

The hunting area is vast and encompasses 1,600 sq. kilometers. The area has some of Tanzania’s unique species such as Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelle, East African Impala and Coke’s Hartebeest.

MAASAILAND CAPE BUFFALO HUNTING METHODS

A typical day on safari in Maasailand will be an early wake-up call before dawn with a filling breakfast served with your choice of coffee or tea. You will depart camp with a fully-equipped hunting vehicle at first light and begin looking for animal sign and tracks.  You will drive the vast plains and use the small hills to gain a vantage point to glass for buffalo. Once the buffalo are spotted all hunting is done on foot in the traditional way, but since this area is wide open, it is a very different hunt than the other areas of Tanzania that have thick miombo bush. The open terrain will involve some careful stalking and crawling to get within range of your trophy.

This area produces some of the best trophy buffalo in Tanzania and a 40’- 42” buffalo is a realistic expectation, with some trophies going 45" plus.

A mid-day lunch will be held while out on safari. The afternoon hunt will continue as was done in the morning, by searching the vast areas for a suitable trophy bull. After arriving back at camp at or after sunset, you will have time to enjoy a refreshing hot shower before having a relaxing evening enjoying the fine cuisine prepared by the chef.

Your PH will be a very experienced dangerous game hunter with many years of dangerous game hunting experience.  He will be highly experienced in hunting Africa’s big game and you will be in competent hands for the duration of your hunt.  Your tracker / skinner will be among the best that Africa has to offer.

MAASAILAND PLAINS GAME

A full bag of plains game including Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, Fringe-Eared Oryx, Grants gazelles, and Thompson's gazelles are available on this safari.  For a list of available plains game species, use the link below:

Each tent has its own in-suite bathrooms with hot showers. The camp has daily laundry service.

The meals prepared by the chefs are a welcome treat after a hard day of hunting.  You will enjoy a large variety of wild game dishes as well as more traditional cuisine - perfectly prepared.  An exquisitely prepared meal that is accompanied by a fine bottle of wine is an unexpected pleasure of safari life.
