This Moonlight Safari offers a unique opportunity to pursue a variety of Africa’s most exciting nocturnal and specialty species in the Limpopo bushveld of South Africa. Hunting takes place on a private 19,500-acre concession near Musina and focuses on predators and nighttime animals such as civet, honey badger, genet, porcupine, jackal, baboon, and vervet monkey. Much of the safari revolves around carefully managed bait sites, nighttime blind hunting, and strategic setups around active predator travel corridors. This is a highly specialized safari designed for hunters looking for something different from a traditional plains game hunt.
The Night Animal Hunting Area in Limpopo
The hunt takes place near Musina in Limpopo Province, South Africa, on a private 19,500-acre concession that has been professionally managed and hunted for more than 26 years. The terrain consists of dense mopane bushveld with some rolling hills, ridgelines, and rocky mountain terrain, along with thick riverine habitat from the Sand River that winds through the concession, which creates thick riverine vegetation and dense natural cover used heavily by nocturnal predators and specialty species. Large trees, thick brush, and shaded travel corridors along the river systems create excellent habitat for civet, genet, honey badger, and other nighttime animals.
Away from the river, the terrain opens into rolling mopane flats, rocky ridges, and bushveld hills that support healthy populations of plains game used for bait and predator management. The combination of river systems, bushveld, and rugged terrain creates an authentic African wilderness environment with excellent diversity of wildlife.
The Moonlight Safari Hunting Methods
Each day begins early with breakfast at the lodge before heading into the concession with your PH and trackers to check bait sites that were established during previous hunts. Tracks, feeding activity, and nighttime movement around the baits are carefully inspected to determine which predators or nocturnal species have been visiting specific areas.
Depending on activity levels, the team may spend part of the day refreshing bait sites or harvesting additional bait animals such as impala or baboon to keep predator locations active. This bait management process plays a major role in the success of nighttime predator hunting and requires constant monitoring throughout the safari.
Midday is usually spent back at the lodge while the staff prepares blinds near the most active bait sites. In the late afternoon, hunters quietly move into position before dark and settle into blinds overlooking bait locations and predator travel corridors.
As darkness falls and the bush comes alive with nocturnal activity, the hunt becomes a patient waiting game focused on movement, sounds, and careful shot opportunities under low-light conditions. This style of hunting creates an exciting and completely different safari experience compared to traditional daytime plains game hunting.
About the Animals
This safari focuses on several of Africa’s most unique nocturnal and specialty species, each offering a very different hunting experience. African civets are beautifully marked nighttime predators known for their distinctive spotted coats and elusive behavior. Genet are smaller, agile predators that move quietly through thick brush and trees, often appearing suddenly at bait sites before disappearing just as quickly into the darkness.
Honey badgers are widely respected for their toughness, aggression, and fearless behavior far beyond their size. They are one of Africa’s most sought-after specialty animals and are notoriously difficult to hunt successfully. Porcupines provide another unique opportunity, often approaching bait sites cautiously after dark. Jackals are highly intelligent and wary predators that require patience, careful setups, and accurate shooting under low-light conditions.
Baboons and vervet monkeys are extremely alert and intelligent animals that rely heavily on eyesight, elevated vantage points, and communication within groups to detect danger. Both species can provide surprisingly challenging hunting opportunities during daylight hours.
The combination of these species creates a safari focused heavily on predator behavior, nighttime movement, patience, and strategic bait management.
About the Nighttime Animal Outfitter
This outfitter has been operating professional safaris in Limpopo for more than 26 years and offers a highly personal and authentic African hunting experience. One of the things that makes this safari unique is that clients hunt directly with the owner and outfitter, ensuring a hands-on experience with a strong focus on professionalism, ethics, and attention to detail.
Their goal is to provide a traditional African safari atmosphere while maintaining comfortable accommodations and excellent service throughout the hunt. The concession is carefully managed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and consistent hunting quality across both plains game and nocturnal predator species.
The combination of experienced guiding, carefully managed bait systems, and intimate knowledge of predator behavior gives hunters an excellent opportunity at species that are rarely pursued successfully on traditional safaris.
The Night Animal Hunting Lodge
Hunters stay in a luxury rustic lodge located directly on the banks of the Sand River. The lodge combines an authentic African safari atmosphere with modern comfort and overlooks the African bush, where animals are often seen moving along the river. The lodge features six spacious en-suite chalets designed to provide privacy and relaxation after long nights in the blind. All rooms have permanent electricity, private bathrooms, cell service, and Wi-Fi internet access.
Guests can relax around the lodge, enjoy drinks overlooking the river, or spend time at the infinity pool while listening to the sounds of the African bush. Meals are freshly prepared daily and served in a relaxed safari atmosphere.
Additional Hunting Opportunities
This safari is specifically designed around nocturnal and specialty species hunting. No additional species are currently offered outside of the animals included in the package.
Trophy Handling
After harvest, trophies are transported to the outfitter’s private skinning facility, where field preparation begins immediately. Skins are carefully cleaned, fleshed, salted, and prepared to preserve trophy quality before transportation to the taxidermist.
Special care is taken with smaller predators and specialty species to preserve skin quality and markings for mounting purposes. All trophies are properly tagged and documented throughout the preparation process.
Trophies are transported to Hunter's Heart Taxidermy shortly after the safari concludes, with delivery typically occurring within approximately one month after the hunt.
Taxidermy
We recommend Hunter's Heart Taxidermy for dip & pack and taxidermy services. Hunters Heart will pick-up your trophies for free. All of our agents use and recommend Hunters Heart. They are a high-quality taxidermist and one of the better ones in Southern Africa.

Testimonials
"I booked a plains game hunt in South Africa through Discount African Hunts. The price was half of what other outfitters were selling the same package of animals for. After being assured by John Martins that this offer was for real I went ahead and booked. Everything turned out just like I was told and I took 7 beautiful trophies on the trip of my lifetime. Don't let the low prices hold you back. I am sure I will never take a hunt of this quality again at a price like I paid. My hunt was awesome!"

"First, I wanted to tell you the buffalo hunt with the outfitter you booked me with was great! The PH took me to a farm where there was a good herd of buffalo and I shot a 40” old dagga boy. I could have taken another one a bit wider, 42”, with hard bosses but he did not have that old rough beat-up look I was after."
