This is hunting in wild Africa at its best!  Buffalo hunters dream about hunting in the Selous, where herds of more than a hundred buffalo are common.  You will see a lot of Cape buffalo while hunting here and you will sit around the campfire and listen to the roar of wild lions while you toast the day’s hunt.

The Selous Reserve

The Selous Reserve is the largest unpopulated game reserve in the world.  It encompasses 54,000 sq. kilometers (20,850 sq. mi.) of Africa’s most unspoiled wilderness.  The Selous Reserve is predominantly miombo woodland.  It is uninhabited and divided into 46 hunting blocks, varying in size from 300-500 square miles.

The concession you will hunt is on the banks of the mighty Ruaha river in the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve.  Sandy rivers run through the concession which provide excellent opportunities on leopard, while the nearby rolling hills provide excellent stalking opportunities for Cape buffalo.

The Selous is a buffalo hunters dream!  Although you probably won’t shoot a giant buffalo here, there are herds and herds of buffalo here that collectively number into the thousands.  A 40 - 42 inch buffalo is a big buffalo in the Selous, but buffalo hunting is somewhat of a numbers game and you will look over many buffalo on your hunt.

Good numbers of lion and leopard also are also present here. Daytime sightings of leopards are common.  Elephant numbers have been greatly reduced by poaching, but seem to have stabilized with recent anti-poaching efforts and will once again begin their slow rebound in numbers.

 Cape Buffalo Hunting Methods

This is a great trip to take with your hunting buddy, as the Cape buffalo hunting is something you will both talk about for years.  To shoot a trophy Cape buffalo, you need to see a lot of buffalo.  And Tanzania’s Selous Reserve is an area that will not disappoint!  You will see lots of buffalo daily as you search for that special bull..

A typical day on safari will be an early wake-up call before dawn with a filling breakfast served with your choice of coffee or tea. You will depart from camp with a fully-equipped hunting vehicle at first light and begin looking for animal sign and tracks.  All hunting is done on foot in the traditional way by following fresh tracks using experienced trackers.

A mid-day lunch will be held in the bush under dense tree canopies.  The afternoon hunt will continue on the tracks that were found in the morning, or the trackers will be searching for fresher sign while you hunt plains game on the way back to camp.  After arriving back at camp at or after sunset, you will have time to enjoy a refreshing hot shower before having a relaxing evening enjoying the fine cuisine prepared by the chef.

Your PH will be a highly experienced dangerous game hunter with many years of dangerous game hunting experience.  He will be highly experienced in hunting Africa’s big game and you will be in competent hands for the duration of your hunt.  Your tracker / skinner will be the among the best that Africa has to offer.

A good selection of plains game are available on this safari.  For a list of available plains game species use the link below:

"I spent weeks visiting websites for outfitters in Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, comparing pre-made packages and regular fees. In the end, for a 7-day, six animal hunt with my son as an observer/hunter, John Martins had the best price."
