This is hunting in wild Africa at its best!  Buffalo hunters dream about hunting in the Selous, where herds of more than a hundred buffalo are common. You will see a lot of Cape buffalo while hunting here and you will sit around the campfire and listen to the roar of wild lions while you toast the day’s hunt.

Tanzania's Selous Reserve

The Selous Reserve is the largest unpopulated game reserve in the world.  It encompasses 54,000 sq. kilometers (20,850 sq. mi.) of Africa’s most unspoiled wilderness. The Selous Reserve is predominantly miombo woodland.  It is uninhabited and divided into 46 hunting blocks, varying in size from 300-500 square miles.

The concession's topography is made up of hills, valleys, as well as sandy dry rivers flowing into the mighty Rufiji river. The west of the concession is mostly on the plateau which runs all the way from south to north of the concession. The vegetation is mostly made up of miombo forests, some open grasslands, and the riverine forests on the eastern part lining the Rufiji river. The Selous is a buffalo hunter's dream!  Although you probably won’t shoot a giant buffalo here, there are herds and herds of buffalo here that collectively number into the thousands.  A 40 – 42-inch buffalo is a big buffalo in the Selous, but trophy buffalo hunting is somewhat of a numbers game and you will look over many buffalo on your hunt.

Good numbers of lions and leopards also are also present here. Daytime sightings of leopards are common. Elephant numbers have been greatly reduced by poaching, but seem to have stabilized with recent anti-poaching efforts and will once again begin their slow rebound in numbers.

Selous Reserve Cape Buffalo Hunting Methods

This is a great trip to take with your hunting buddy, as the Cape buffalo hunting is something you will both talk about for years. To shoot a trophy Cape buffalo, you need to see a lot of buffalo. And Tanzania’s Selous Reserve is an area that will not disappoint! You will see lots of buffalo daily as you search for that special buffalo.

A typical day on safari will be an early wake-up call before dawn with a filling breakfast served with your choice of coffee or tea. You will depart from camp with a fully-equipped hunting vehicle at first light and begin looking for animal signs and tracks. All hunting is done on foot in the traditional way by following fresh tracks using experienced trackers.

You will be transported on a Cessna Grand Caravan 208, which seats 12 people including the two pilots. These are modern well-maintained aircraft and are a definite upgrade from the typical 4 seaters that are used for flying clients into their hunting camps in the Selous.

Everything was done very professionally and the outfitter and his group went out of their way to provide us with a wonderful experience and a great time.

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt.  By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price.  I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow.  The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable.  I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard  in Zimbabwe.
