Story

I occasionally checked the DAH site since 2015 and noticed it was consistent. I had never hunted elephant before or even shot a big bore rifle. Finally bit and booked in January for a hunt just six weeks later in March, the rainy season. All of our plans were turned upside down with the elephant in the first area killing a man then excessive rain made roads impassible and permit denied. My PH put together a backup plan and had another permit near Angola ready when we got off plane. Big thunderstorm the first morning at 5 AM made tracking conditions superb. We found big bull tracks down the first road and took off with trackers carrying the 458 Lott with 500 gr solids. The PH put me in place and had given me good instruction on heart shot. I had watched several videos so I knew also about the hip shot which I made going away to bring bull down. He was shot thru the heart and lungs so we would have found him but it was better to put him down quickly. Too soon my hunt was over as we were back at truck at 10:27 AM. We returned about noon and so enjoyed the natives that came by the dozens to harvest every bit of the great old 60+ year old bull. The next day we gave candy, colors, paper, and gifts to the Conservancy for their school and tipped our trackers and left for seven days of plains game hunting with my son getting four nice trophies. Rained on us most days and we saw rivers flooding for the first time in decades!

Additional Info

I learned the Namibia model of allowing the native people to get the permit fees and share the meat was a win for all, as it allows the for the game to have much greater areas to live in. The excitement and gratitude for the meat from so many made people let us know that the animal was not wasted, but honored in death.
I would recommend that the next person recognize that this is Africa and things do not always go as planned. Be adaptable and enjoy the hunt.

Recommendation

I will definitely recommend this hunt and PH. Discount African Hunts is the best as it got me off my indecision about spending the money to go do what I always dreamed of, which was hunting a big old mature African elephant. I was not concerned about tusk length or weight but wanted a post mature bull. John Martins was there to answer my questions and he did what he represented. This was not a 5-Star luxury hunt but I was not looking for such. This was a great hunt and well worth the money.
Thanks, Discount African Hunts!
