EU Zambian elephant importation update

Elephant Trophy Import Ban Lifted by the European Union’s Scientific Review Group (SRG)

The SRG has decided to withdraw its ruling against importing elephant trophy parts from Zambia as of its latest meeting on September 15, 2015.  Zambian wildlife officials provided new information concerning the population numbers of elephants in their country.  Recent aerial surveys estimate the population to be in excess of 33,000 in three distinct areas – Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue.  They also indicated that elephant surveys will be ongoing, and their hunting management scheme has been changed to reflect the new information.

On the basis of Zambia’s new disclosures, the SRG has agreed to issue a positive opinion on future elephant trophy importation.  Depending on a number of conditions, Zambia has authorized 80 elephant trophies for exportation per year.
