This hunt for giant crocodiles will occur on Mozambique's Lake Cahora Bassa, which is a dammed portion of the famous Zambezi River. There is a huge density of hungry crocodiles here, and many of them grow to be true giants. This is not a physically demanding safari, as boats are used to search for giant crocs. Crocodile Hunts in Africa

Crocodiles, along with hippos, round out the dangerous seven African animals.  All in all, crocodile hunts in Africa are not that dangerous.  Crocodiles are dangerous to hunt because they are stealth ambush feeders and take a fair number of villagers each year while they are washing clothes and performing other activities near the water’s edge.  Not to mention that looking for a wounded crocodile in waist deep murky water is fraught with danger and certain to raise the hairs on the back of one’s neck.

The Nile crocodile occupies the Nile River basin in Northern Africa and extends throughout equatorial Africa southward into northern South Africa and Mozambique.  Crocodiles grow up to 18 feet in length and may weigh in at over 1,000 pounds.  Specimens have been taken in excess of 20 feet in length.  A true trophy monster croc in today’s Africa is any crocodile that is over 15 feet in length.  In the old days, crocodile hunts in Africa were done while hunting other species.  Today, they are still added to the bag while on safari for other species, but in modern Africa it is becoming more common to take a specialized hunting safari targeting trophy crocodile and hippo combined.  Taking a trophy crocodile can be pure luck, but typically it requires a dedicated crocodile hunt where the day’s primary activities are centered upon baiting and / or spotting a large crocodile and then trying to get within range for a lethal shot.

Anchoring a crocodile basking in the sun on the bank requires an accurate shot to its tiny brain or a spine shot.  A slight error in shot placement will many times see the crocodile slide back into the water and disappear forever.  Crocodile hunts in Africa require patience, as many crocodiles may have to be observed before a suitable trophy specimen is targeted.

Many trophy crocodile hunts are done each year in central and southern Africa.  The largest specimens seem to come from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania.  Lake Cahora Bassa in Northern Mozambique is a prime destination for taking crocodile hunts in Africa.  Northern Zimbabwe’s and Zambia’s Lake Kariba is also a popular destination for crocodile hunts.
